With the storm Filomena besieging Europe, freezing temperatures, snow and ice are transforming landscapes across the continent, taking typical winter images to another level. Here are some tips to gain comfort and safety in the face of foggy windows and adverse conditions, and to enjoy winter while driving safely.
The steam, the great enemy. The contrast between the low temperature outside and a higher temperature inside the vehicle causes the windows to fog up. "When we find ourselves in this situation, we must raise the temperature of the air conditioning to the maximum and put the diffusers towards the windows", explains María García, Development and Aerodynamics engineer at SEAT. Systems such as the Defrost Max allow this process to be accelerated. It is important not to forget that the comfort temperature, that ideal for traveling, is 21.5ºC.
Warm without danger. Although the cold outside can tempt us to drive with our coat on, it hinders our freedom of movement and can compromise safety, so the best option is to activate the heated seats to acclimatize quickly. This system provides uniform warmth in just three minutes. "We must activate them just when getting into the car and regulate their use as we acclimatize, avoiding prolonged use at high temperatures", advises María García.
Winter sports? Transport the material properly. Not everything is inconvenient. Winter is also a great time to enjoy the snow. If you have a ski resort nearby and the restrictions allow it, you can travel to practice a family snow sports. The ideal is to travel in a large car with great capacity, such as the SEAT Tarraco, anchoring the skis or snowboards, in their covers, in the trunk. If not, it is also a good option to transport them in a ski accessory on the roof rack, always directing the tips of the skis backwards.
Driving safely. All these elements (ski rack, full trunk ...) condition driving. And therefore, extreme precautions must be taken. First of all, before leaving, it is essential to check that the tire pressure is correct for our car. Secondly, "it must be taken into account that with the vehicle loaded, the braking time increases, so we must leave more safety distance", explains the driving expert and ski fan, Jordi Gené.
Like a driver on the snow. On a snowy road, you have to take extreme precautions and anticipate situations with low grip, such as humidity or ice on the asphalt. It is very important to carry a full tank, since "in the event of a breakdown or any incident, we can use the heating until assistance arrives", explains Gené. The use of chains or winter tires is vital for safety.
